Messages are encrypted in your browser with AES-256-GCM before they are sent. The server relays base64 it cannot read and never writes it to disk.
Everyone who should read along needs the same passphrase. There is no recovery: lose it and the messages are gone. Encrypted history is kept in memory only and disappears when the room empties.
